Description

The 2021 farm cash receipts for the district totalled $29.8 million, with $8.8 million in cattle & calves and $4.1 million in hay and clover production. 2021 yields averaged 1.2 tons/acre of hay, 39.2 bushels/acre of canola and 137.7 bushels/acre of oats. Corn yielded at 140 bushels/ac on average in 2021, with soybeans at 36.8 bushels/ac.

Ag Overview

Based on the 2021 Census, there are 223 farms in the District, predominantly in beef production. Hay is the predominant field crop but fair to moderately high soil productivity can support a number of field crops and there has been a large increase in recent years in corn & soybean acreage. The District is home to the Rainy River District Regional Abbatoir and the Ontario Crops Research Centre - Emo Agricultural Research Station, which has approximately 1,300 plots in crops, forages and horticulture, operated by the University of Guelph.

Climate and Soil

The average growing season is 170 days. The west of the District sits in climate zone W and the east sits in climate zone F. Soils are predominantly Dystric Brunisol, with a tract of Deep Gleysolic soils between Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods, and some organic soils near the Manitoba border.
